New electric car from China: Aiways U6 SUV coupé brings “lifestyle” to Europe

With the Aiways U6 SUV coupé, a new electric car from China is coming onto the market. The vehicle is based on the same platform as its brother, the U5, and aims to bring “lifestyle” to Europe. The SUV coupé advertises with an autonomous driving function and artificial intelligence.

The Chinese start-up Aiways is creating new competition on the European electric car market. On Friday, on the occasion of World EV Day (in German: “World Electric Car Day”), it celebrated the European premiere of the announced Aiways U6 SUV coupé and published pictures showing the European series version for the first time.

This is for customers “who value lifestyle and emotions,” according to a press release. The e-car combines the lifestyle, dynamics and emotional design of the previously presented U6 Ion study, a “spacious” and “sporty” crossover coupé, “with the unrivaled space and high utility value of the already available U5 SUV”.

The U6 SUV coupe is the second model after the U5 to be based on the all-electric “MAS” platform. The second has been on the market in Germany since September 2020 – and is currently available in six European markets.

Electric car “continuously revised in all essential areas”

Aiways has not yet provided any information on the drive and battery of the U6 SUV coupe. But it should be like the U5: 63 kWh battery with a range of over 400 kilometers according to WLTP. The U5 also has an engine output of 204 hp and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.

On the outside, however, the U6 SUV coupé differs primarily in its coupé-like roof line and the independently designed headlights. Two LED projectors are installed there. And the Chinese start-up also relies on a one-piece LED light strip at the rear that stretches across the entire width of the vehicle. The interior comes largely without switches and buttons. Instead, it is operated using a display.

“The new model has been continuously revised in all key areas and is a testament to the high innovative strength of our young brand,” says Alexander Klose, Executive Vice President Overseas Operations at Aiways.

This is how the company, founded in 2017, summarizes the artificial intelligence technology in the U6 SUV coupe, which was specially developed. There are no further details on this yet. With the U5, however, this is a facial recognition function that recognizes the driver and monitors his or her attention. If the system detects inattention or fatigue, it should suggest a break. The focus of the model is therefore on sophisticated aerodynamics, highly networked drive and safety technology and a decidedly sporty appearance.

Airways is planning further expansion in the near future

The U6 SUV coupé should be launched in Europe “soon”. The first engineering vehicles have arrived for final tests in Munich, where the Chinese carmaker’s European headquarters are located. The vehicle is already in pre-sale in China.

The price for the U6 SUV coupé will probably start at 40,000 euros. The new vehicle model is intended to give a further glimpse of the future of the brand. The Chinese carmaker plans to continue its expansion in Europe in the near future. After Germany, market launches are to take place in the Netherlands, France, Sweden and Israel, among others.
