Anyone who owns an electric car needs a lot of electricity. The German automotive supplier Bosch has now presented a charging cable at the IAA, which for the first time can be used on both mobile charging stations and domestic sockets.
A small gadget will be one of the highlights of this year’s International Motor Show (IAA). The world’s largest automotive supplier Bosch presented its new Flexible Smart Charging Cable a few days ago. The black cable weighs only three kilograms and is therefore almost half as light as conventional electric car charging cables. Much greater savings, however, are noticeable in a further detail. Thanks to an adapter, you don’t have to take two cables with you. A big step, because in the future electric cars can be charged at wall boxes, charging stations and household sockets.
Bosch: New charging cable enables temperature control
The adapter of the Flexible Smart Charging Cable eliminates the need for an in-cable control box, which was needed until the end for charging at a normal 230-volt socket. Instead, Bosch is presenting a type 2 connector that comprises two central components for controlling and monitoring the charging power. Temperature control and residual current circuit breakers are integrated in the plug so that there is no overload during regular charging. Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging of the three-phase cable is made possible by up to 22 kilowatts of alternating current. The integrated technology guarantees a safe and fast charging process.
It seems that Bosch will not only be able to charge electric cars in no time at all: it took the developers about 18 months from the initial planning to market readiness. The company plans to start delivering its charging cable to car manufacturers and end customers as early as mid-2022. “With the universal charging cable, Bosch is making electromobility even more customer-friendly,” says the chairman of the Bosch Powertrain Solutions division, Dr. Uwe Gackstatter. “Our goal is to make the new cable standard equipment in electric vehicles.” The price of the Flexible Smart Charging Cable is not yet known.
