The Smart #1 is the first car to emerge from the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely – at the same time, the vehicle marks a trend reversal for small city runabouts. The star spoke to Smart Germany CEO Wolfgang Ufer about the new models and electric driving in Europe.
When the first Smart Fortwo rolled off the assembly line in 1998, it should have been an electric car in the minds of the people who dreamed up the vehicle in the early 1990s. But things turned out differently: by 2018, almost two million small combustion vehicles had rolled off the assembly line, and it was not until 2012 that significant numbers of electric cars left the company’s plants.
