Ford F-100 Eluminator Pick-up – cool vintage car with the latest electric drive

Ford wants to sell an electric drive without a car. The F-100 pick-up from 1978 shows how cool an electric car can look.

At the Sema trade fair in Las Vegas, Ford is showing for the first time what you can do with the Eluminator electric motor. For the show, two motors and a battery pack were installed in an old F-100 pick-up. With the twin engine set-up, the old car now has 480 hp. It should reach a speed of 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds – this corresponds to about 100 km / h. There is also the 88.0 kWh battery pack of the Mach-E GT.

The show car and one-off is to bridge the time until the electric pick-up, the F-150 Lightning, is in the shops. But it should also encourage imitators. “Our F-100 Eluminator concept is a foretaste of how we’re helping our customers transition to all-electric powertrains and adopt zero-exhaust emissions, even on our historic vehicles,” said Eric Cin, Global Director of Vehicle Personalization, Accessories and Licensing at Ford.

Construction kit for the DIY car

This is an exciting vision for restaurateurs. There are repeated complaints that today’s cars all look the same. Here you now have the opportunity to retrofit old car bodies with the latest technology in a completely environmentally friendly way. Since the standard battery packs lift the car up, bulky vehicles such as pick-ups are ideal. In a filigree sports car from the 1970s, you would have to consider another solution for accommodating the battery.

But more was done on the show car than just electrifying it. The model was developed by MLe Racecars, but the Roadster Shop built a completely new chassis to accommodate the batteries and drive. That is the really big solution. Under the bonnet there is a trunk and a transparent cover that reveals the drive train. A concession for the role as an exhibit.

Motor already available

The pick-up was painted in Avalanche Gray, with copper providing accents. Michelin Latitude Sport tires were mounted on the 19-inch rims. Inside, leather and aluminum dominate, and the cockpit is equipped with a 15.5-inch touchscreen from the Mustang Mach-E.

At the moment only the engine can be bought from Ford. A motor with connections costs 3900 euros, but the other assemblies should also be available to customers shortly. Even if the show car is primarily responsible for shine at the fair, it is primarily intended to encourage imitators.

Ford’s strategy of selling the modules of an e-car without vehicles remains interesting. In the USA it is not only possible to restore classic cars, but smaller companies could use it to manufacture and sell small series of highly individual vehicles.
