Pact with Tesla

Tesla’s battery charging network has long been sought after by EV experts. But Elon Musk’s “superchargers” are now gaining an unexpected backing: that of the other car companies.

Ford was the first to announce a partnership with Musk in late May, followed by General Motors earlier this month. Last Tuesday, electric vehicle (EV) company Rivian said it wants a similar alliance.

With these partnerships, Musk agreed to let consumers of rival car brands use his national network.

GM chief executive Mary Barra said she was “really excited” about nearly doubling the volume of chargers available to her company vehicle owners. She added that she hopes Tesla’s system, known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), will be unified for the continent which “would allow for more mass adoption.”

This has helped push Tesla shares up 40% since Ford’s announcement on May 25.
