Bet on hydrogen

Under the slogan “Let’s change the future of automobiles”, Toyota announced a series of new technologies for its transformation into a mobility company.

It happened during the “Toyota Technical Workshop”, where Hiroki Nakajima, Executive Vice President and Chief Technological Officer of Toyota Motor Company, explained the company’s technological strategy and the direction towards the future of vehicle manufacturing. He was accompanied by the president of the brand new BEV Factory, Takero Kato, and Matsumasa Yamagata, who will head the Hydrogen Factory in July. These two new business units will unify the company’s developments in two key areas for the decarbonization of mobility: battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and the hydrogen economy.

During the presentation, Nakajima gave an explanation about the Toyota Mobility Concept, and the three key approaches to its realization: electrification, intelligence and diversification:

“In the field of electrification, Toyota maintains its diverse approach (“multi-pathway”) to introduce each technology according to the context of each region. In the area of Intelligence, in addition to vehicles and services, we will also promote initiatives to broaden our connection with society, such as Woven City. Likewise, we will continue to diversify our operation, broadening our focus of action from ‘vehicles’ to ‘society’, incorporating freedom of mobility and diversity of energy solutions”.

Nakajima also explained the changes in the company’s R&D areas, of which already half of its staff and economic resources have gone to Advanced Development, in future-oriented projects.

In turn, he listed three principles for vehicle manufacturing: 1) “Prioritize safety without extenuating factors.” 2) “The future is built together”, generating alliances with multiple partners. 3) “Acceleration of localization”, promoting “development close to our customers”.

“What we hope to achieve with the BEV Factory that we opened in May is to change the future with this type of vehicle. We will transform cars, manufacturing and the way we work”, said Takero Kato, president of this new organization that unifies the development of the new generation of battery electric vehicles.

Thanks to the new generation batteries, sonic technology and aerodynamic design with Artificial Intelligence, the goal is to achieve a range of 1,000 km.
