Genesis Electrified GV 70: Made for the plug

After the two sister brands Hyundai and Kia staged so strongly at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week, many were surprised that the noble offshoot Genesis was missing. At the same time, they unveiled their GV 70 electric crossover in China.

The Koreans are currently giving full throttle to all brands. While the two SUV studies Kia EV9 and Hyundai Seven celebrated their premieres in the Los Angeles Convention Center at the LA Autoshow 2021 there, things were much more realistic at the Guangzhou Motorshow in China. The still young mid-range SUV Genesis GV 70 is getting an electric version. When it comes to the nomenclature, the bustling Koreans didn’t bother too much and simply call the newcomer Electrified GV70. The competitor to Audi E-Tron or BMW iX3 is only available as an all-wheel drive model. The two electric motors each produce 160 kW / 218 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque, so that the total output is 320 kW / 435 PS. In boost mode it is an impressive 360 ​​kW / 489 PS / 700 Nm. This accelerates the electric all-wheel drive from a standstill to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds. Purely electrically, it should travel more than 500 kilometers with one battery charge.

Thanks to its fast charging system, the Genesis Electrified GV70 can be charged at both 400-volt and 800-volt stations without the need for an additional converter. This means that the high-voltage battery in the underbody can be charged from ten to 80 percent of its capacity in just under 20 minutes at a 350 kW fast charging station. In addition, the vehicle has bidirectional charging capability, which offers up to 3.6 kW of charging power and can thus supply various external electrical devices with power. Part of the drive system is the so-called Disconnector Actuator System, which automatically connects and disconnects the motor and drive shaft, taking into account the current driving conditions, which reduces consumption. “Our global vision is to contribute to a sustainable future through electrification, thus continuing the commitment we made when we launched Genesis in 2015: creating a positive impact on our customers’ lives,” said Jay Chang, Brand Director from Genesis, “I am delighted to be taking another bold step towards a sustainable future with the new electric model.”

Otherwise, the Genesis Electrified GV 70 relies on the same comfort and safety functions as the combustion model. Active noise control, among other things, contributes to the particularly comfortable driving experience. With the help of sensors and microphones, it measures and analyzes the road noise in the interior and at the same time generates inverse sound waves to reduce the noise level. The driving behavior is optimized by the predictive electronic chassis control, which takes into account information from the front camera and navigation system about the road. The Electrified GV70 is the first Genesis model to have the SUV-specific e-Terrain driving mode. The market launch for the electric Genesis GV 70 is next year.
