IAA: BMW XM presents new monster SUV and receives harsh criticism

An almost monstrously huge radiator grille and sharply drawn lines – the style of BMW chief designer Domagoj Dukec is now known, but not necessarily popular with all car fans. The brand line is also clearly recognizable in the latest study – and that excites many users on social networks.

BMW XM: New giant SUV with an output of over 700 hp

First of all about the car: the near-series design study of the BMW XM is to become a new “super crossover”. It puts the previous top models in terms of performance and dimensions, the BMW X7, X5 M and X6 M, in the shade and is only offered as an M variant. A turbocharged eight-cylinder and electric assistance ensure sufficient propulsion, which comes to a total of 550 Nm / 750 PS and a maximum torque of a gigantic 1,000 Nm. The model can drive 80 kilometers on its mighty 23-inchers in purely electric mode.

Huge grill and sharp lines: BMW reaps criticism for XM SUV

Just like the upcoming 7 Series BMW in the 2022 version, the BMW XM will also roll to customers with a new BMW face. In the new face of the brand, the indicators and daytime running lights are separated from the LED main headlights. Also striking are the huge radiator grille, pithy lines and an appearance that can only scare you – at least that’s how many people see it on social networks. For example, the columnist Don Dahlmann wrote on Twitter: “If BMW continues like this, they will be the next Nokia.” In particular, the grotesque design with the huge radiator grille is criticized. BUND traffic expert Jens Hilgenberg also criticizes the consumption values of the massive SUV: “Probably more than 2.6 tons empty weight. And yet this plug-in SUV from BMW will also be included in the statistics with fantastically low official consumption and CO₂ values. “

Chief designer Domagoj Dukec cannot understand the mixed reactions to his design language. “The double kidney grille is the central brand identification” said Dukec at the end of 2020 about the then new BMW 4 Series. “It’s an iconic graphic, the shape of which has been varied over and over again over the decades. With the new BMW 4 Series, it is again vertical and very expressive – and therefore deliberately polarizing.”
