Small cars and big dreams: The miniature world is fascinating even in the age of the Internet. Today, for example, it is possible to present your own models or dioramas to a global audience. The magazine “Modell Fahrzeug” has given the award “Model Vehicle of the Year” for the 31st time – people like to speak of the “Model Car Oscars” to give the model kits a bit of Hollywood glamor. For the second time, the award ceremony was not held in front of an audience, but purely virtual.
As usual with the awards of the trade press, there are plenty of winners because there are correspondingly many categories. There were 28 readers to choose from. The sizes range from model railway scale 1:90 to size 1:10.
Readers choice of kits and models
The candidates are chosen by readers voting. A special feature here: The readers of the magazine assess models and kits as they are offered for sale. This is a completely different approach than at trade fairs and meetings, where finished built models or dioramas are awarded, where the proud builders have usually significantly refined the purchased kit. But the trend towards a lifelike scene does not pass the award ceremony either.
This year the innovation award went to the Brekina brand. The Black Forest company is offering a Ferrari set that includes a true-to-the-original racing transporter from the early 1960s, the “Sharknose” Monoposto 156 F1, which was victorious in the Formula 1 World Cup, and a complete pit crew. Every model maker can create his own world from this set. Editor-in-chief Andreas A. Berse: “All successful model car suppliers have at some point started to build a world around their miniatures. Brekina now takes this pioneering idea into account in the 1:87 scale, which is also very popular with diorama builders.”
The price range of the winners ranges from the Lancia Stratos from Minichamps in 1:87 for 22 euros to 500 euros for a Mercedes SSK Trossi “Black Prince” from CMC in a scale of 1:10.
