The Bavarian start-up Numbat and the supermarket chain Feneberg have big plans: They want to build the “most comprehensive fast-charging network in Germany”. In the south of the country there will in future be a charging station every ten kilometers that will provide pure green electricity. Construction is scheduled to start in 2022.
The start-up Numbat and the food chain Feneberg want to significantly promote electromobility in Germany and build numerous fast charging stations in the Allgäu, in southern Germany. Every ten kilometers, drivers of electric cars should have the opportunity to refuel their vehicle with electricity. From the third quarter of 2022, the two Allgäu companies want to set up fast charging stations at over 40 Feneberg branches that will provide 100 percent green electricity. A fast charger is to be built per location, which will have two charging connections and provide electricity with a maximum output of 300 kW.
“Our goal is to prove that fast charging stations can be created not only on motorways or hubs, but also everywhere through the combination of fast charging stations and battery storage in conjunction with our technology. Since our numbats do not have to be connected to the medium-voltage network, we avoid interference with the infrastructure and major construction projects such as transformer houses, “said the founders of Numbat, Maximilian Wegener and Martin Schall.
“With Numbat, we have now found a way to implement the topic of ultra-fast charging stations as an offer for our customers and, thanks to the integrated battery storage system, we are able to store the PV electricity from our own solar systems and through the integrated Energy management system to save electricity, “says Nico Fischer, Head of Construction, Building and Energy Management at the food retailer Feneberg.
Start-up wants to expand the fast charging network
In just 15 minutes, drivers should be able to bring their electric car to a battery charge of 80 percent. When it comes to prices, the start-up founded in February wants to orientate itself towards those of market leaders such as EnbW. Numbat press spokesman Uli Benker quantified the targeted charging costs compared to the stern to around 55 cents per kWh. He also announced further projects. In the course of 2023, Numbat wants to build a total of 100 quick charging locations in the Allgäu, for example at car dealerships, hotels, clinics and a vocational school. How and when the projects are actually implemented “depends on the construction work and the building permit,” explains Benker.
The expansion of charging stations in Germany must be accelerated
In order to achieve the goals of expanding electromobility, Germany needs to build significantly more fast charging stations. The Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) recently came to the conclusion. Because the number of newly registered electric cars is increasing faster than the expansion. There are currently an average of around 250 public charging points being added each week. In order to achieve the goal of the traffic light coalition of one million public charging points in 2030, around 2,000 charging points would have to be built every week.
