Two thirds of all new cars were registered commercially last year. This also explains the rather boring colors that are most often found in Germany. 31.6 percent of all cars were gray, 26.5 percent black and 20.7 percent white.
The strongest segment is SUVs, which clearly dominate at 30.1 percent. The compact class follows with 16.3 percent, followed by small cars with 11.9 percent.
Tesla sells the most popular electric car
It is interesting to take a look at the drive types. 34.4 percent of all new registrations are gasoline engines, 29.5 percent are hybrids, with very few vehicles being plug-in hybrids. There, the Federal Motor Transport Authority recorded a decline of 51.1 percent compared to the previous year to 6.2 percent within the drive category.
After an increase of 11.4 percent, pure electric vehicles already account for 18.4 percent of all new vehicles. The most popular model is the Tesla Model Y, closely followed by the VW ID.4 and ID.5.
Chinese manufacturers, such as Nio, Aiways, BYD and Lynk & Co., are still having a difficult time, but this is due to the dealer network and the lack of availability of the cars. A lot is likely to happen here in the next two years.
Gas drives hardly play a role
In the current statistics, diesels only account for 17.1 percent and have therefore been overtaken by electric vehicles. Alternative types of drive such as cars powered by liquid gas or vehicles powered by natural gas do not play a major role. The latter, with 1,327 new registrations, is almost outside the measurable range; for liquid gas there were only a meager 13,147 cars, the equivalent of 0.5 percent.
The used car statistics are also exciting: in 2023, 7 million vehicles were re-registered, and 6.03 million cars changed owners.
