Bargain: What’s on the Aldi e-bike for only 999 euros?

In the Aldi branches there is an e-bike at a great price. There is no high-end bike for 999 euros, but the Aldi e-bike is also sufficient for errands in the city and the way to the office.

Aldi now offers two e-bikes in its branches – to be precise, a trekking bike in a women’s and men’s configuration. The price is 999 euros. In short: if you are looking for a cheap e-bike and don’t want to conquer mountains or complete ultra-long tours with it, you should rush to the nearest shop. Because you can’t order the bikes online. As usual, there is a three-year guarantee and on-site service at your home. Allegedly, all you have to do is screw on the pedals, adjust the handlebars and then go home.

Why is the offer so exciting? The simple explanation is “Covid”. Two years ago there were numerous offers in this price range, but the lack of bikes and the high demand have significantly reduced the offer below 1000 euros. So if you don’t want to spend 2000 euros or more on your e-bike, you have to take advantage of the rare offers.

A lot for the money

In addition, the bike doesn’t make a bad impression for the price. Nobody should of course believe that they can get more or less the same bike for 999 at Aldi that they would have to spend 2500 on in a specialist store. The wheel comes from Prophete, the house and court supplier to the discounter. The wheel is driven by a rear wheel motor. You don’t have to give anything to the imaginary name on the case. A classic hub motor from China (e.g. Bafang geared) is installed. From a technical point of view, an engine attached to the center of the frame has advantages. For someone who doesn’t ride trails, that makes little to no difference. As always, the motor can provide 250 watts and is limited to 25 km / h. A battery with a capacity of 461 Wh serves as a power donor. That is a little less than the Bosch standard of 500 Wh. Aldi specifies a maximum range of 120 kilometers. That sounds realistic for a moderate pace with minimal assistance. At full power, the battery should be good for about 50 kilometers in the flatlands.

It is positive that the battery is not attached to the luggage rack, but to the frame below. An occasional biker also benefits from this better load distribution. Attention: The cells of the battery come from LG, not the battery itself (LG inside). Basically, the control of a China drive is not as sensitive as with the systems from companies such as Bose, Yamaha or Bosch – but as long as you are not off-road, this is not a significant disadvantage. The support can be set in five watt levels.

The advantage is that the power of the hub motor does not affect the chain and sprocket set. The wear is therefore noticeably less than with the mid-engine. An eight-speed gearshift from Shimano is installed – without a twist grip, but with a rapid fire trigger. As well as a complete lighting system and hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano instead of the mechanical brakes usual in this price range. In addition, there is a complete street equipment with stand, mudguards and reflectors. Nice extra: the stem can be adjusted individually. It is therefore easily possible to vary the posture from athletic-inclined to upright-comfortable.

Not for steep inclines

Our opinion: You can’t go wrong here for 1000 euros. If you don’t have any special requirements in terms of power delivery, metering and suspension, you get an everyday bike with an electric motor. The things that are not state-of-the-art, such as the rear wheel motor and visible battery, are not a disadvantage for everyday cyclists – on the contrary. The undemanding solutions are just as durable and can be exchanged more easily if problems arise.

The only drawback that we fear is steep inclines. Normally, with a 250 watt hub motor, an incline of about 10 percent is the limit. Due to the control, the support dies. There should then be problems with tours to mountain huts. A gear shift reaches its limits anyway.

A little tip: older men should also take a look at the women’s bike – getting on and off is much easier with the top tube pulled down.
