What are the most popular car colors in the country?

According to data from BASF’s Automotive Paints unit, the most popular colors were:

  • In the first place, the white with 42.5%;
  • In the second instance, the silver color with 21.6%;
  • Gray third with 15.2%;
  • They complete the ranking of colors: black (8.6%); blue (5.3%); red (3.2%); beige (2.1%); orange (0.7%); brown (0.5%); gold (0.3%); and yellow (0.01%).

“Although there is no direct relationship between the consumer’s taste or desire and their final purchase decision, we see a preponderance of neutral colors such as white, silver, gray and black over bright colors when purchasing a vehicle. This year, white was once again the most chosen color on the market, something that has been held for several years worldwide, ”says Fabián García, senior manager of BASF’s Automotive Paints division.

In that sense, every year the designers of BASF’s Paint division create a new collection to inspire car designers, exploring new spaces of color, textures and surfaces. To carry out the study, they use industry, fashion, consumer products and nature, and consider, among other aspects, the growing demand for sustainable and efficient processes for human beings and their relationship with the environment.

In the latest edition of BASF’s Automotive Color Trends Study 2021-2022, the designers established that the key color in South America will be “Amicable Glimmer”. This color is a triple overlay of pale and soft yellow, combined with a light shower of glass flakes that shine on the surface and enhance a 3D format on the vehicle.

“Beyond the preponderance of neutral tones, we can see that finishes with more effects, that is, metallic and pearl colors, are increasingly chosen. Automotive companies are looking for surfaces with greater treatments and that when making interference with the light simulate different tones depending on the angle from which they are viewed ”, adds García.

BASF’s Automotive Paints unit and its color laboratory work together with different automotive companies to provide increasingly innovative solutions. This year the company became the first and only supplier of water-based paint in Argentina. This eco-efficient technology meets high standards of sustainability and performance, reinforcing BASF’s commitment to the environment.
