Tesla repeatedly emphasizes how durable the Cybertruck is – in practice, things sometimes look different. A thief in the USA recently demonstrated that the shatter-proof windows do not prevent a break-in. But that was not the biggest problem.
Tesla is particularly emphasizing the robustness of the Cybertruck. Not only is the bodywork protected from dents, damage or long-term corrosion thanks to the stainless steel cladding, but the windows also received special attention when the car was introduced.
But it was already clear when the car was presented: apparently it is not that easy to protect car glass from all kinds of stress. Chief designer Franz von Holzhausen managed to destroy the windows twice in a row by throwing a steel ball. “At least the balls didn’t go through,” Tesla boss Elon Musk said at the time, visibly surprised, and announced that the glass would be reworked.
This was obviously done, because as another crash would prove years later, it now takes a lot of force to damage the glass. Tesla did it too, but with a baseball.
But just because the glass tends to withstand more direct impact from hard objects than the windows of other vehicles, you shouldn’t think that the car is therefore burglar-proof.
Thief removes glass from Cybertruck in one piece
A thief recently demonstrated this in a . A vehicle owner posted this on Facebook a few days ago. You can see a man wearing a hoodie stopping next to the Cybertruck and checking the area. When he sees that no one is watching, he strikes. Within a few seconds, the man manages to completely peel the window out of the door. He simply rips down the badly damaged but complete pane and gains access to the car.
The man then dives briefly into the Cybertruck before getting back into his car with a backpack, which drives away after a strangely long pause.
Cybertruck driver received no message
Worse than the weakening window is another technical problem. The victim of the theft, a man named Anuj Thakkar, writes: “No alarm, no notifications on my phone. Literally nothing happened, I found the car like this. This can’t be right. Does anyone know why there is no alarm system?”
Normally, a Tesla is very well protected against unauthorized access. The so-called “” records suspicious activity around the vehicle after the car has been left. Tesla writes: “If a threat is detected or the vehicle sensors detect frequent jerky movements, such as those that occur when towing or rocking, Sentinel Mode reacts as follows: The headlights light up in pulses, the alarm sounds, you are notified on the mobile app that the alarm has been triggered, and video recordings of the incident are saved on a USB drive.”
Although the “guard mode” is deactivated by default because it requires a relatively high amount of energy, it was switched on when the Cybertruck was broken into. This is proven by the recordings that the car saved of the crime. Thakkar cannot explain why it did not work properly.
In the comments below the video, there are other Tesla customers who also report a failure of notifications in the event of attempted break-ins.
Windows must be removable
The broken window is hardly surprising, however, as a burglar would probably gain access to any other car in a matter of seconds. However, other manufacturers do not advertise that the glass is particularly robust.
That doesn’t make much sense for a private car, because in an emergency you have to be able to destroy the window quickly and easily if the doors can no longer be opened. So that’s also possible with the shatter-proof Cybertruck glass, but in one piece, not in individual pieces. The difference to a conventional window is probably a kind of coating that prevents the glass from crumbling. Nothing more, nothing less.
