Last year there were more new SUV registrations worldwide than ever before. The cars are particularly popular in Europe.
The number of new registrations of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) worldwide reached a new all-time high last year. As the Statista graphic based on data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) shows, a total of 35.6 million vehicles of this type were newly registered in 2021. This corresponds to a market share of around 46 percent.

More SUVs in China and USA
Around every fifth car (20.5 percent) was registered in Europe. There is only a larger number of registrations in the USA (8.6 million SUVs) and in China (11.2 million SUVs). SUVs are also very popular in Germany. The SUV record year so far is 2019, as this shows. At that time, 762,490 sport utility vehicles were newly registered in Germany. In the Corona year 2020 – with a similarly high market share – there were around 142,000 fewer vehicles.
