Germans are loyal to their car manufacturers. This can be seen by looking at the current ranking of “”. The opinion research institute not only wanted to know which manufacturer Germans are loyal to, but also which brand they would consider buying in the near future. There were differences here and elsewhere – apparently neither the genders surveyed nor the different generations agree.
Audi in front – but not for a purchase
Overall, Audi is ahead of the manufacturers. With a score of 25.7, the Ingolstadt-based company is one point ahead of Mercedes-Benz, which has to settle for second place. Volkswagen achieved a good third place, with BMW coming in very close behind. Only then is there a visible difference in the ranking.
With 16.1 points, Škoda came in fifth, followed by Toyota, Volvo, Porsche and Opel. Ford was last in the top ten.
The score that “Yougov” uses for the rankings is based on results from six categories: general impression, quality, value for money, customer satisfaction, willingness to recommend and employer image.
However, when it comes to an imminent purchase, the respondents’ verdict is somewhat different. By a fairly large margin, 34.1 percent said they wanted to buy a BMW. This puts the Munich-based company in first place.
Even brands that didn’t even make it into the top ten in terms of popularity appear here. Hyundai is in fifth place, and Kia is in tenth place. Porsche, which is actually in eighth place among the most popular car brands, does not appear here. Possibly a question of price – after all, you can like things even though you wouldn’t or can’t buy them.
A look at the four participating generations is also exciting: Audi leads the rankings for Gen Z (1997-2006), Millennials (1981-1996) and Gen X (1965-1980), but Baby Boomers (1946-1964) prefer Mercedes-Benz. Sports car manufacturer Porsche, on the other hand, falls somewhat behind among older generations, but is becoming increasingly popular again, especially among younger people.

methodology
For the representative survey by “Yougov”, online surveys were conducted between August 1, 2023 and July 31, 2024. Only brands that “according to the results among the population aged 18 and over, can show at least 300 reviews in the evaluation period, were tracked for at least 183 days and are still actively tracked” were considered.
