Global car sales up 4.6% year-on-year

The global car market in 2021 increased by 4.6%, to 81 million 307 thousand cars and light commercial vehicles. This was reported on January 17 by the analytical agency Avtostat.

Thus, China remains the world leader in car sales last year with an indicator of 25 million 508 thousand, which is 4.3% higher than in 2020. In the US, 14 million 901 thousand cars were sold – 2.8% more than in 2020.

Car sales in Western Europe in 2021 amounted to 12 million 402 thousand cars (-0.2%). Car sales in Eastern Europe increased by 4.3% to 4 million 046 thousand units. In South America, dealers sold 2,335,000 vehicles, up 2.4% from 2020.

On October 29, it became known that from 2014 to 2021, the total number of models of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles officially sold in Russia decreased by 32%.

So, if seven years ago the number of car models offered by distributors was 442, then in 2021 it dropped to 299. Thus, over the past seven years, 143 models have left the Russian car market.
