McLaren 765LT Spider: logical consequence

At McLaren, LongTail stands for racetrack fun based on a combination of weight reduction and increased strength. The 765LT Spider serves the topless faction and makes both the 720S Spider and the predecessor 675LT Spider look old.

First of all, good news. The McLaren 765LT Spider is not sold out yet. At least in terms of the total. As with the Coupé, only 765 of the open version of the over 720S Spider will be built. However, you have to be quick if you want to get hold of another copy and you also have to be patient. Because the batch for 2021 is already sold out. The price? 369,000 euros.

The screws that McLaren technicians turn on the Spider-LT are basically identical to those on the other long-tail models. Less weight, more power and sophisticated aerodynamics. With 563 kW / 765 PS and a maximum torque of 800 Newton meters, the V8 biturbo in the rear of the 765LT Spider logically brings 33 kW / 45 PS more to the road than its brother in the 720S Spider. Simply tuning the PS is not enough for an LT version. Another important adjustment screw to satisfy the agility-hungry clientele is weight.

The McLaren 765LT Spider comes as standard without air conditioning and sound system, but both can be ordered at no extra charge. The classic in the McLaren car diet are the aluminum rims, which together with the Pirelli tires lose 22 kilograms. The titanium exhaust system weighs just 10.9 kilograms and saves more than 40 percent in weight compared to a steel version, plus thinner disks, and the engineers use lightweight materials in the transmission, which shifts 15 percent faster than that of the 720S Spider of Formula 1.

Wherever possible, the technicians have looked for ways to reduce the mass of the car. This ranges from the applications in the doors to an optimized lithium-ion battery that is three kilograms lighter than the previous energy storage device. The front apron saves 1.2 kilograms and at the rear it is 4.9 kilograms. At 1,388 kilograms, the McLaren weighs 80 kilograms lighter than the open 720S and the usual 49 kilograms more than the 765LT Coupé. On request, the extremely light racing seats from the McLaren Senna at 3.35 kilograms can be used and then, together with other lightweight construction measures, reduce the weight to 1,278 kilograms.

But the standard 765LT Spider is impressive enough: from a standing start, the athlete breaks the 100 km / h mark after just 2.8 seconds and is up to 330 km / h. The formula also works on the racetrack. Thanks to the aerodynamic improvements, the McLaren 765LT Spider generates 25 percent more downforce than a 720S Spider and has entered the history books of the English car manufacturer with the best lap times that a topless long tail has ever burned into the asphalt on racetracks. The braking system from the McLaren Senna ensures the appropriate deceleration.

The basic rigidity of every McLaren due to its architecture, the central element of which is a carbon monocoque, also contributes to this. Due to the natural torsional stiffness of the MonoCage II-S, the technicians need fewer struts, which means that the weight difference between the Coupé and the Spider is reduced to 49 kilograms. In addition, the double doors open a little wider, making it easier to get in and out. So that you can enjoy the unadulterated enjoyment of the fervently simmering eight-cylinder steam hammer even in bad weather, you can lower the rear window and enjoy free entry to the cylinder music.
