New Popemobile: Francis becomes the electric pope

Pope Francis is getting a new Popemobile. As has been the case for almost 100 years, it is a Mercedes-Benz. But this time it is particularly stylish.
In the future, the Holy Father will stroll through the masses. The latest popemobile from Mercedes-Benz is an electric car based on the new G580. The pontiff has been relying on the G-Class for several decades, but the electric variant actually appears to be not only perhaps the most beautiful, but also the smartest choice in a long time.
This is due to the fact that the electric G-Class is ideal for particularly slow journeys and has the so-called “Intelligent Off-Road Crawl Function” as standard. This allows you to choose between three modes that bring the car to very slow and constant speeds when you release the brake pedal.
Pope G-Class designed for particularly slow journeys
This is actually intended for off-road driving, but the function is also perfect for extremely leisurely driving through crowds. Mercedes-Benz states that the drive train has been “adapted to the particularly low speeds for public appearances”, with the aforementioned off-road function likely serving as the basis.
In addition, an electric car makes sense at such speeds. Fuel consumption doesn’t matter because range isn’t important on short journeys. In addition, the trailers are spared from exhaust fumes.
Mercedes-Benz built the car for around a year
If you look at the history of the Popemobile, there have been some unsightly vehicles in the past. That too is probably a thing of the past with the electric G-Class. If you remove the removable roof, you’ll see an amazingly beautiful pickup truck that could easily be placed in rappers’ music videos.
As usual, the Holy Father’s seat is behind the driver. The rear was extensively remodeled for this purpose. In total, work on the new popemobile took about a year.
It remains to be seen whether the switch to an electric vehicle will also trigger a rush for zero-emission cars among his disciples.
