The US Food and Medicines Administration (FDA) has authorized the marketing of Zyn nicotine bags, turning them into the first product of this type authorized in the United States. The authorization, granted to Swedish Match for marketing in the US .
“The FDA’s decision recognizes the role that Zyn can play in the protection of public health by helping people leave cigarettes and other traditional tobacco products” said, Tom Hayes, President of Swedish Match North America, LLC.
“It is estimated that 45 million Americans consume nicotine regularly, and approximately 30 million of them smoke, the most harmful form of nicotine consumption,” he added Hayes.
FDA officials said Thursday that Zyn contains less harmful ingredients than cigarettes and that several types of smokeless tobacco, including the shame, linked to cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. In addition, regulatory agencies said the company’s data showed that “a substantial part of adults” that they previously smoked changed Zyn.
“In this case, the data show that these products of nicotine bags meet that criterion by benefiting adults who consume cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products,” said Matthew Farrelly of the Center for FDA tobacco products.
