National Parks

After Almost 30 years a Huemul specimen (hippocamelus bisulcus) in the Lanín National Park, Neuquén. The animal was present in the protected area, which marked an important milestone for the conservation of this emblematic species of the Andean region and declared a natural monument nationwide.

In detail, the specimen – which was monitored with radiocol – crossed from Chile Towards the Queñi area. The Lanín National Park and the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve make up a Natural Biological Corridor, Where efforts are made to recover this species that had disappeared in this region on both sides of the mountain range around the decade of 1980.

The return of the huemul to the Lanín National Park

This finding is part of a joint project between the National Parks Administration (APN)through Lanín National Park (NLP) and the Patagonia Norte Regional Directorate, and the neighboring Biological Reserve Huilo Huilo (RBHH) of Chile. The institutions of the institutions seeks to favor the return of the huemul to the park by improving the conservation status of the area between these two areas, with emphasis on the needs of this species.

Since 2005 the Huilo Huilo Foundation implements in Chile the project of Huemul conservationraising specimens for release in natural habitats under protection and active management measures. After registering the dispersion of individuals to the border with Argentina, in the Queñi area, the implementation of the “Habitat improvement and threat approach to the natural recolonization of the huemul in the cross -border area formed by the RBHH and the NLP” began.

Among the actions carried out by the Foundation are; development of monitoring; Exotic fauna control and management for the improvement of the environment in order to generate conducive conditions for the return of the species.

This milestone is the result of 20 years of joint effort between national parks and Huilo Huilo, through shared scientific information in the cross -border area and the implementation of effective conservation strategies.
