The digital driver’s license comes – EU plans far -reaching reforms
The digital driver’s license becomes standard, that provides for an EU reform. However, there will be no mandatory tests for older drivers.
In the debate about a reform of the EU driving license rules, mandatory health tests for older drivers are finally off the table. In contrast to the EU Commission, an agreement between the European Parliament and EU member countries from the night of Tuesday does not provide for such regulations. The 27 EU countries had fundamentally agreed on this more than a year ago.
Anyone who passes a driver’s license test must have a medical examination or self-disclosure about health in all EU countries in the future. The driver’s license should then be valid for 15 years. In the event of an extension, the EU countries can also request a medical examination, but can also choose against it.
The still incumbent Federal Minister of Transport Volker Wissing (independent) had campaigned against health tests for older drivers in the negotiations in Brussels. He rejected a voluntary introduction in Germany.
EU wants to introduce digital driver’s license
The reform is intended to become a digital driver’s license across the EU by 2030, which can be called up via a smartphone, for example. Driver’s license holders can also apply for a physical ID. With the reform, the EU also stipulates a trial period of two years in all member countries. The European Parliament and the Council of the EU countries still have to end up with the change in the law.
