Cultural East Goldtimers: These cars shaped the GDR

If you think of the GDR and its current classic cars, you hardly get out of the charming Trabi. But the east produced more vehicles than just racing cardboard.

BMW 3 Series, VW Golf, Audi V8 or Mercedes SL – all unique cars from German lands. But there were a few more classics, because even beyond the inner German border in the GDR, some cool models cruise through the streets – and much more than just the Trabi.

The German Democratic Republic has no such colorful and varied auto history as the former West Germany. But even in cities such as Jena, Gera, East Berlin or Leipzig, there were thousands of car fans for decades, which, apart from GDR import exceptions such as VW Golf, Volvo 240 or 3 Series BMW, arranged with models from their own production or exile models from Eastern Europe.
