How will the electric car change the market? In the stern interview, car designer Lutz Fügener talks about the cars of the future, good design and the trend away from SUVs.
With the age of electromobility, the car industry has to extensively revise its concept. She faces major hurdles and uncertainty about the future. Finally, it is clear that electric cars are a done deal. And with that, new trends are already emerging.
What distinguishes a good design? What will the cockpit of the future look like? What influence will electric cars have on the development of cars and what functions will autonomous driving have?
Professor Lutz Fügener is a car designer and head of the Design and Mobility course at the Hof University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria, lecturer in engineering in the field of automobility at the RWTH Aachen University and co-founder of the StudioFT design agency in Berlin. He provides answers to these and other questions. Here is an excerpt of the interview:
Mr. Fügener, how will cars change in the future?
Making predictions is a gamble. It is being developed in very different directions – from the huge pickup to the smallest vehicle. This is exactly what will happen in the future. However, there are a few interesting directions of development. We are still in the middle of the SUV era. At the intellectual level, climate change and the sustainability of mobility are discussed. That doesn’t seem to go together. The first vehicles are already showing a direction.
My impression is that cars are increasingly becoming multimedia computer systems.
One is that the car is supported with the help of computer technology when driving. But multimedia is something else. Not only the media consumption for the passengers in the car is an issue, but also needs that are not so easy to satisfy, such as going to the toilet and taking a shower. This is actually a great need of drivers – especially on medium and long distances.
Do electric cars have a decisive influence on future vehicle design?
Yes, definitely. The interior of an electric car can be designed differently than a combustion engine car in terms of volume distribution. With an electric car, you can even distribute the batteries and motors in the vehicle. And that will change cars.
