The summer holidays are just around the corner. But for many households, however, there is no way of thinking because the money is missing. A population group in particular is often affected.

A summer vacation is priceless for many people in Germany: In 2024, every fifth person (21 percent) lived in a household in a household that claims that they could not afford a week -long vacation trip. A total of 17.4 million people, as the Federal Statistical Office calculated.

After all, the proportion of those who are unable to finance a one -week vacation was slightly less than in 2023 with 23 percent at the time. And: Germany was in 2024 below the interior of the European Union. According to figures from the European Statistics Authority Eurostat, the EU lived a good quarter (27 percent) of the population in households in the past year, which could not afford a one-week vacation trip.

Single parents particularly affected

Single parent is particularly lacking in money for a vacation, as can be seen from the numbers for Germany: 38 percent from this group could not afford a one -week vacation in 2024. The proportion was also above average among the only lives with 29 percent.

For families with children, according to statistics, it depends heavily on the number of children whether a trip can be financed or not: 16 percent of couples in Germany each had no money for vacation with one or two children, while it was 29 percent with three or more children.

Vacation is luxury for many people in the EU

In the EU comparison, people in Romania had comparatively rarely enough money for a vacation: 59 percent claimed that they could not afford a trip there. This group was also relatively large in Greece in 2024 (46 percent) and in Bulgaria (41 percent). The rarest was a lack of money in Luxembourg (9 percent), Sweden (12 percent) and the Netherlands (13 percent) an obstacle for a week’s vacation.
