Rail gets more than 100 billion euros by 2029

With the help of the huge special fund, the renovation backlog is to be dissolved in the transport infrastructure. Exactly what it is – and what the consequences are.

The Federal Government wants to invest around 166 billion euros for the renovation of dilapidated railway lines and motorway bridges by 2029. Of these, around 107 billion euros should go on the rails alone. “We will all have to get used to even more construction sites to bring the transport infrastructure to shape,” said Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) in Berlin. The focus is on the renovation and preservation, especially with the rail network and the motorway bridges.

Another focus is the digitization of the rail, said State Secretary Stefan Schnorr. The ministry expects the railway to drive digitization. On the one hand, it is about modernization of the signal boxes, and on the other hand about the train security system ETCS (European Train Control System). Among other things, this ensures that trains can communicate with each other and drive poets in a row.

Around 52 billion euros are to flow into the federal roads by the end of the legislative period in 2029, around 8 billion euros in the waterways. According to Schnieder, the traffic investments are to be increased by around 60 percent compared to the years 2020 to 2024.

The renovation backlog should be ended, said Schnieder. The majority of the money should flow from the planned, debt -financed special fund for infrastructure and climate protection, for which a total of 500 billion euros are available over a period of 12 years. Schnorr said the construction industry now has planning security. However, price increases should not occur too high.

The Deutsche Bahn was pleased with the additional funds. “We welcome the Federal Cabinet’s project to significantly increase the funds for the rails for this and the next year,” said a spokeswoman on request. “With the planned federal budget 2025, the corner values for 2026 and the new special fund infrastructure and climate neutrality, the financing of the rail infrastructure in Germany is raised to a new level.”

For the period after 2027, a reliable and adequate financing must also be ensured in the medium and long term, it said. “This is the only way to build up the necessary capacities, for example in humans and machines.”

According to DPA information, the 107 billion euros are around 29 billion euros more than was planned for this period than the old federal government. However, the sum remains around 18 billion euros below the need that had been registered.

Many bridges in Germany are dilapidated. At the rail network, the federal German railway is planning to fundamentally renovate more than 40 high -loaded routes. After the work, the railway hopes for years of building freedom on the sections. This should help to gradually improve the punctuality of the train and increase reliability on the rail.

In this way, the Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim was renovated in this way. This year the route between Hamburg and Berlin is on. The railway plans to stretch the general renovations in time. The last railway line would only be finished in the mid -1930s and not as previously planned 2031.

Schnieder said in the next households a view of the reinforced new construction of roads and rail paths had to be directed. He had announced to the train to develop a strategy until late summer.
