Energy companies plan mega battery park

Earn money with cheap green electricity: large storage facilities make it possible. A particularly powerful battery park is now to be built in the Ruhr area. Stadtwerke are also involved.

One of the largest battery stores in Germany is to be built in the Ruhr area in the coming years. The energy companies Trianel, Luxcara and BKW in Waltrop are planning a memory with an output of initially 900 megawatts, as Trianel announced in Aachen. “Other up to 600 MW are in preparation,” it said.

In the first expansion stage, the storage park is said to have a storage capacity of 1,800 megawatt hours (MWh). With this amount of electricity, around 600 households with an annual consumption of 3,000 kilowatt hours could be supplied with electricity for a year.

Battery storage: buy electricity cheap and sell with profits

Energy companies store electricity -bought electricity in large batteries and sell it again when the prices are higher. Because the memory can quickly provide electricity, they also play a role in the stability of the power grid.

“Battery stores are ideal for stabilizing the overall system both in terms of market and network,” said Trianel boss Sven Becker. “Large batteries enable us to save renewable energy intelligently and to act in a targeted manner,” said BKW boss Robert Itschner.

Battery park is built next to coal -fired power plant

It is planned to build the battery park on a fallow land next to the Trianel hard coal power plant Lünen. Lithium iron phosphate batteries that are housed in containers are planned. The construction is scheduled to start in 2026. Commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2028.

Estimated total costs: over 600 million euros

520 megawatts of performance, which specializes in energy transition projects specializes in Luxcara (Hamburg), is eliminated to the Swiss energy company BKW (BERN) 300 megawatts and the Trianel 80 Megawatt Stadtwerke Cooperation. BKW puts the investment volume for its third to over 200 million euros. This should cost the overall project more than 600 million euros.

According to the Battery Charts at the University of Aachen, there are currently 317 large storage facilities with a storage capacity of more than 1,000 kilowatt hours each in Germany.

Several large memory planned in Germany

Other energy companies also plan large systems. In Hamm, RWE wants to build three battery parks with a total capacity of 1,200 megawatt hours. The EON subsidiary Preussenelektra plans a battery memory with a capacity of 1,600 megawatt hours at the Brokdorf nuclear power plant in Schleswig-Holstein. The energy group LEAG also plans to build a large battery park in the Lausitzer lignite area by 2030.
