Vacation with radio hole? This is not something for everyone. According to a study, this is exactly the case with half of the most popular campsites.

Millions of people in Germany go on vacation at campsites and are also dependent on a good cell phone network. But mobile network supply is not always up to date, as an evaluation of the Verivox comparison portal shows.

The fight against the radio hole

A good half of the 50 most popular German campsites are fighting with radio clads: there are smaller or larger network gaps for at least one network operator on 52 percent of the systems. A WLAN supply is often offered, but not guaranteed. According to the Verivox research, there are free WiFi for holidaymakers on 42 of the 50 most popular places-however, some operators limit the supply to parts of the space, such as in the areas of reception and restaurant. Seven places require money for WiFi.

Of the 50 examined campsites, according to VERVOX 24, very good network quality has – both the 5G mobile phone standard and the previous version 4G/LTE are available on the entire space of all network providers. The intensity of the network gaps deviates significantly on other systems: on some places, only a small cell on the edge is worse, others, on the other hand, would have almost no 5G network and only partially covered the older 4G standard.

Coastal region well supplied, in the south more frequent network gaps

The places on the North and Baltic Sea coast usually have a very good network supply, but here too there are deficits according to the examination. The larger the terrain, the more likely gaps – the network quality can also vary from parking space to parking space.

On the other hand, the network is sometimes holey on squares in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. “Mobile network supply is often better in the flat north of Germany than in the more scenic, but often more mountainous south. Such topographical obstacles make network expansion difficult,” said Verivox telecommunications expert Jörg Schamberg.

The mobile supply of around the camping places left significantly to be desired. Because hardly anyone stays on the grounds all the time, after all you have to walk with the dog or to the beach. “In the adjacent radio cells, there are sometimes complete radio sparkles in which the emergency call does not even work – this can be the case in the scenic areas in the Black Forest or in the Allgäu,” said Schamberg.
