The former head of the German Union Association (DGB), Michael Sommer, is dead. This was announced by the DGB in Berlin. Summer was chairman from 2002 to 2014.
The long-time DGB boss Michael Sommer died last night at the age of 73, the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) said on Monday. Summer was the federal chairman of the DGB from 2002 to 2014.
“We say goodbye to a convinced trade unionist with grief and great gratitude,” said the DGB. During his long term, summer successfully brought in the voice of the unions in many political debates. His greatest political success was the enforcement of the general statutory minimum wage, the umbrella organization praised the trade unionist.
Michael Sommer was significantly involved in Verdi foundation
Summer was born in Büderich in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1952. In 2001 he was instrumental in the foundation of the United Service Union Verdi and became deputy federal chairman of Verdi in the same year. In 2002 he followed the outgoing DGB chairman Dieter Schulte in office.
Summer was also active internationally as a trade unionist, as the DGB carried out. In 2010 he was elected President of the International Trade Union Confederation and in this function represented the interests of 168 million union members worldwide.
