Garden owners are increasingly relying on the robotic lawnmowers. According to experts, the devices have several advantages over classic lawn mowers – they are still controversial.
In more and more German gardens, robotic lawnmowers are on the road and automatically cut the grass. Between January and April, almost 110,000 devices were sold in this country – 45 percent more than in the same period in the previous year, as the GFU industry association announced. Sales rose by 64 percent to around 125 million euros. The figures come from the market research company NIQ.
According to the experts, the success of the robotic lawnmowers lies, among other things, the simple operation, the low volume and the comparatively environmentally friendly operation of the devices. In contrast to petrol -powered lawn mowers, robotic lawnmowers worked more efficiently, more sustainable and are also less maintenance, it is said.
Night driving ban in some cities
However, the devices are controversial for conservationists. If you do without it, do Igeln, insects, amphibians and other animals something good – the federal government for the environment and nature conservation (BUND) refers to this. With the growing spread of the robotic lawnmower, the number of injured hedgehogs had also increased significantly, explained the state animal protection officer in Baden-Württemberg, Julia Stubenbord.
Experts, including representatives of the federal government and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, have long been calling for a night driving ban for robotic lawnmeaters. Some municipalities such as Cologne and Mainz have already introduced this. This is also discussed in other cities.
