the economic losses due to the fires would reach ,000 million

A survey carried out by the Rural Society indicated that productive losses exceed $25,000 million. But this figure responds to the 300,000 hectares burned two weeks ago.

One of the main agricultural activities most affected is livestock. Corrientes has 4,600,000 head of cattle, representing the fourth national stock after Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Córdoba. Meat production is 325,084,771 kilos. With the fires, they estimate that there is a loss of 3,575 million pesos in total kg of meat lost. Likewise, it is contemplated that the annual average mortality of animals is 3% but that in emergencies it reaches 4.5% (69,480 more animals), with an average value per head of 75,000 pesos, losses reach $5,211 million for said reason.

Another aspect to highlight is the cultivation of rice. According to the Rural report, in the 2021/2022 campaign, the hectares planted reached a total of 96,000, which represented approximately 45% of the national surface. It is estimated that there is a 25% production loss, they are about 200 million tons, and if a price of $23,760 per ton is taken, the losses of the sector reach 4,968 million pesos. It was also highlighted that 65% of the rice planted in Corrientes is made with dam water, and these have low or no reserves, which means that if the rains do not appear, the next campaign is in danger.

Regarding afforestation, Corrientes has 550,000 hectares of implanted forests, where 70% correspond to pine and 30% eucalyptus, and it is the first province in national surface. According to official estimates, approximately 10,000 hectares were burned. At an average value of wood per hectare of 50,000 pesos, the sector’s losses reached 5,000 million pesos.

In turn, in the production of yerba mate, where the province has some 60,000 cultivated hectares (30% of the national total), they estimate a reduction in production of some 64 million kilos (50% of the total), which would be equivalent to $3.2 billion. Likewise, they project an additional cost of $480 million to recompose the hectares lost due to the death of plants.

And finally, the citriculture, where the province has 30,000 hectares, they project that the damage to the sector will be $1,800 million. In this framework of desolation for the producers, The Government increased the budget for a key Environment program by almost $4,200 million, from $7,735 million to $11,928 million. There’s also the extra $4 billion that will go to the National Fire Management Fund. This amount was specially allocated for said Fund.
