In Germany, self -sufficiency with fish can drop to less than ten percent, warns the president of the German Fisheries Association. Bureaucracy and nature conservation affected the fishermen.
The President of the German Fisheries Association, Dirk Sander, demands more support for the domestic fishermen. “In Germany, the degree of self -care with fishing products can soon fall below ten percent,” said Sander, according to the speech at the opening of the German fishing day in Nuremberg. “We have recently gained the impression that you feel a little too safe in Germany when it comes to food supply.”
The self -sufficiency of the EU with fish has dropped from around 50 to 30 percent in recent years – and the dependence on imports has increased, said Sander. The trend must be reversed.
According to the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE), the level of supply of fish in Germany was temporarily 20.4 percent last year.
Fischer complain about bureaucracy and EU law
According to Sander, Fischer in Germany suffer from bureaucracy and their costs. From the “egg to recycling”, according to the president, you have to document everything. The effort undermines competitiveness.
The nature conservation of fishing also increases. “Our next large joint construction site will be the law to restore natural ecosystems,” said Sander. The EU law adopted in June 2024 provides for a renaturation of damaged habitats on land and in the sea. For example, the EU member states are obliged to initiate restoration measures to at least 20 percent of the agricultural and marine areas by 2030.
Fischer have landed more fish
The German deep-sea and coastal fishing brought ashore around 162,530 tons of fish last year, reports the BLE. This corresponds to an increase of four percent compared to 2023. At the same time, the proceeds easily dropped from around 182 to 180 million euros.
“One reason for the increase in the amount of the incoming quota is higher catch rates for swarm fishing such as herring,” said BLE head of Lutz Wessendorf, according to the message. The herring catch 2024 with around 60,483 tons rose by 72 percent compared to the previous year. The decline in proceeds is that more favorable fish has been caught.
