Mobile air conditioning systems cause high electricity costs

Mobile air conditioning systems are not that expensive. But the electricity costs quickly become noticeable in the wallet, as a comparison shows.

The electricity consumption of mobile air conditioning systems costs around a third of the purchase price annually. This is the result of an evaluation of 247 mobile air conditioners of the portals Verivox and testberichte.de.

“If you cool with a mobile air conditioning system in summer, you pay less to buy than for a permanently installed system, you have to expect high operating costs,” reported the portals. Within three years, the electricity costs added up to the original purchase price on average.

Purchase price: 303 euros – electricity costs: 109 euros

Mobile air conditioners for room sizes between 15 and 30 square meters cost an average of 303 euros. With a electricity price of 35 cents per kilowatt hour and 350 operating hours in cooling mode, they caused an average of around 109 euros in electricity costs per year. This results in an average consumption of a good 311 kilowatt hours.

Larger devices for 31 to 45 square meters, which cost 467 euros on average, used electricity for 133 euros annually.

Verivox: Don’t cool the whole apartment with it

“The mobile air conditioning system should be used in the smallest possible room,” advised Verivox energy expert Thorsten Storck. “Cooling larger rooms or the entire apartment with such a device is not very efficient and comparatively expensive.”

“Mobile air conditioning systems are definitely ideal for the short-term temperature regulation of individual rooms such as bedrooms or study,” said Sonja Leibinger, from Testbericht.de. Especially for tenants who are not allowed to carry out structural interventions, these devices often represented the only option for indoor climatization.
