Putin urged to solve the problem of poverty in the Russian Federation

One of the most important issues that the Russian authorities need to address is the fight against poverty. This was announced on Thursday, February 17, by President Vladimir Putin.

“Constantly think about it and move towards solving one of the most important issues. I am talking about the fight against poverty now,” Putin said at a meeting on economic issues.

On January 27, Putin said that the main task today is to get the Russian population out of poverty. The President stressed that socio-economic problems give rise to strong public discontent, and the illusion that these problems can be ignored or “driven somewhere into a corner” is fraught with serious consequences.

In October, the head of state announced a decrease in the number of people living below the poverty line. According to him, there has been a positive trend in the standard of living of the population – since 2000, the number of people living below the poverty line has decreased from 40 million to 19-20 million people.

The government of the Russian Federation in October predicted a decline in poverty to a historic low in 2023. According to his data, in order to achieve the national development goals of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2024 and for the planned period up to 2030, the number of the poor in 2021 and in the next three years will decrease faster than previously expected.

According to the forecasts of the Cabinet, in 2021 the share of people with incomes below the subsistence level will fall to 11.4% (which correlates with the World Bank forecast) instead of 12.1% in the September interim version of the document. In 2022, the poverty rate should fall to 10.8% (previously expected 11.5%), in 2023 – to 10.1% (previously 10.9%), and in 2024 – to 9.6% (previously 10.4%).
