Produce your own electricity on the roof so that heating or loading the electric car: more and more households are relying on photovoltaics. In 2024, the systems contributed a record share in the power grid.
More and more private households and companies in Germany rely on solar energy to generate electricity. With the operation of photovoltaic systems, around 59.5 million megawatt hours of electricity were fed into the network in 2024, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. According to the statistics, 13.8 percent of domestic electricity production was eliminated on photovoltaics – a record. In the previous year, photovoltaics had identified 12 percent of the total electricity feed.
In March 2025, a good 4.2 million photovoltaic systems with a nominal output of around 98.3 gigawatts were installed on roofs and land in Germany. This increased the number of plants by almost a quarter (23.7 percent) at the same month last year, and the installed performance rose by 21.9 percent during the period.
A current evaluation of the Federal Association of Solar Economics even comes up with an installed output of more than 107 gigawatts. However, it is based on figures from the market master data register at the beginning of July and, for example, also includes the approximately one million balcony power plants in Germany.
China dominates – production in Germany breaks a
The Federal Statistical Office, on the other hand, recorded all photovoltaic systems that incorporate into the networks of public care and have a electricity meter that measures the fed -out electricity. Smaller systems, such as the increasingly popular balcony power plants, do not usually fall underneath.
The most important country of origin for photovoltaic systems in Germany remains undisputed China: almost 86 percent of the facilities imported to Germany came from the People’s Republic in 2024. The import value of photovoltaic systems was more than three times as high as exports from Germany, which last year collapsed by more than half to 510 million euros.
The production of solar modules for photovoltaic systems in Germany also decreased sharply. In 2024 it dropped by a good 56 percent to 1.5 million solar modules. The downward trend continued in the first quarter.
