Grilling to go: Germans often reach for a disposable grill

After a heel tip in Corona pandemic, grilling devices are no longer on the market. The small and cheap disposable grills, on the other hand, come into the shopping cart significantly more often.

Disposable grills have increased vigorously in the favor of consumers. According to an analysis by the market research company Nielseniq, the demand for the small shells filled with coal have risen sharply in Germany, while at the same time less conventional grills are sold.

In the first five months of the current year, 459,200 disposable grills were sold. That is 129,700 pieces or a good 39 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. The numbers refer to the overall market, hardware stores and large supermarkets are part of the analysis.

This has even accelerated the sales growth of the disposable grills: in the first five months of 2024, according to the data from the market research institute, sales had already increased by 26 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Also increasing demand for pizza ovens

In the case of conventional grills and grilled devices that are operated with charcoal or gas, on the other hand, the market researchers from Nielseniq will find a drop in sales this year: 475,000 standard grills were bought in the first five months of 2025. That is 11,700 and 2.4 percent less than in the same period of the previous year.

In the case of coal and gas grills, the average prices are declining at the beginning of this year, while the average prices for electric grills increase compared to the same period last year. The market researchers have found increasing demand for outdoor pizza ovens.

Municipalities like the city of Dortmund appeal to the grill fans of not putting disposable grills directly on the grass for environmental and fire protection reasons.
