Customs: Customs dispute between the EU and the USA: Week of the decision?

The dispute over tariffs between the EU and the USA is an important week ago. US President Donald Trump announced that he wants to send about twelve letters to countries in a customs context. It is unclear whether EU countries are among them. Trump did not give details about the letters – he wants to report more about it on Monday.

And the time is urging: According to Trump’s earlier statements, further tariffs could come into force in imports from the EU – if the EU does not meet him in trade questions. Trump had set a three -month negotiation period. The outcome is open.

Trump wants more production in the USA

Most recently there had been talks between the United States and the EU. Trump primarily justifies his customs policy with the fact that he wants to correct alleged trade weights. He also wants more to be produced in the USA itself.

According to information from the German Press Agency (dpa), a possible deal could further allow an already introduced base customover from the United States. For individual industries-such as the auto industry and the pharmaceutical, chemical, steel and aluminum industry-special regulations would then have to be agreed. Trump had raised particularly high extracols of 25 or 50 percent on imports of cars and car parts as well as steel and aluminum.

Many EU member states consider the risk of an escalating trade dispute to be more serious than potentially somewhat higher tariffs. Chancellor Friedrich Merz had made a quick agreement several times. “This is not about a finely chased, covered, comprehensive trade agreement with the United States in all details. This is now about the quick settlement of a customs dispute,” said the CDU politician recently.

The chairman of the trade committee in the European Parliament, Bernd Lange, sees it differently. He demands not to be put under time pressure. “Care is clear before speed,” said the SPD politician of the dpa. A deal is not enough for the will not.
