Trump threatens BRICS supporters with additional tariffs

Today Trump wants to start informing countries by letter about tariffs or about deals with them. It is unclear whether EU countries will also receive mail. At the same time there are new threats.

In conflict with the Brics group of states, US President Donald Trump threatens to do other tariffs. “Every country that joins the anti-American policy of BRICS is burdened with an additional 10 % customs set,” Trump announced on his online language tube Truth Social. The BRICS countries, which also include Russia, criticized the increase in one-sided tariffs in trade policy in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

Trump also confirmed his announcement to send letters to tariffs or agreements with different countries from Monday. The shipping should therefore begin at 12 noon (local time). The Republican had previously spoken of twelve letters. It is still unclear whether EU countries are among them. He did not give details of the letters.

The time is suitable: Because this week a possible customs deal could be closed between the EU and the USA. On July 9, Trump’s three -month negotiating period ended. According to previous statements, Trump’s other tariffs could come into force on EU imports if the EU does not meet the United States on trade issues. There had been negotiations between the two sides in the past few weeks.

Trump threatened Brics countries with tariffs of 100 percent

Trump had introduced a base tariff of ten percent to almost all imports from the EU in April. In addition, special tariffs apply to certain products, such as steel and aluminum and auto imports. With his customs policy, Trump wants more to be produced in the USA.

The abbreviation of Brics stands for the initial letters of the first five members of the group of states: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In early 2024 Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates were added. Trump had already threatened the countries of the alliance with tariffs of 100 percent at the beginning of the year if they turned away from the US dollar as an international means of payment.
