“Buy an electric car? But I can’t get that far.” Such an argument was common. But the range of the Stromer increases. Now a record is reported.
According to the manufacturer, an electric car has made a distance of 1205 kilometers with just one power load and thus secured an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. The US manufacturer Lucid announced that one of his cars managed a route from Sankt Moritz in Switzerland via Austria to Munich last weekend.
There was a lot of downhill on the track, Sankt Moritz is about 1800 meters and Munich around 500 meters above sea level. The deepest point of the journey was on Lake Constance with almost 400 meters above sea level, after which the information was uphill to the Arlberg tunnel at more than 1200 meters – and then down again.
The Guinness Book of Records confirmed the maximum value in the category “People’s longest journey of an electric car with a load”. “We set new standards in electromobility,” said Lucid chief engineer Eric Bach. The previously valid Guinness book maximum value of 1045 kilometers, which a Mercedes stromer had only reached in Japan in June, was significantly exceeded with the Lucid ride.
Ride in the everyday life of customers less
In everyday life of drivers, however, the range should be significantly lower than on the record trip. The Lucid Air Grand Touring model, with its 831 hp, brings it to 960 kilometers with its 831 HP, and user reality should be even lower.
Lucid has so far been little known in Germany, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, only a little more than 500 electric cars from the US manufacturer were approved in April. The proportion of 1.7 million electric cars in Germany is negligible. Lucid’s cars are expensive, the list price for an Air Grand Touring starts at 129,900 euros.
Experts no longer consider high reach to be important
Industry experts reacted behavior to the record value. “The reach race continues, although a high range loses importance,” said Stefan Bratzel from the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) in Bergisch Gladbach. The charging station network in Germany, including quick charging options, is getting better and a very high range is not necessary. On the one hand, only a few long-distance trips and on the other hand you take a break every two to three hours anyway, in which you can charge well.
Bratzel also spoke of a marketing campaign with a limited informative value with a view of the route on which the Lucid car was rolled down a lot. However, he admitted: “In the minds of many customers, the range is still in there.” Perhaps such a marketing campaign contribute to the fact that consumer worries are weakening due to supposedly too low range – in general in relation to electric cars.
Ferdinand Dudenhöffer from the Bochum Center Automotive Research (Car) pointed out that the ranges of new electric cars in the past three or four years have improved and are no longer too far away from the scope of a diesel car. In addition, the loading times are getting shorter. Therefore, the range of range as a sales argument loses relevance.
