With his customs policy, US President Donald Trump is now also targeting South America’s largest economy – and links the unusually high tax with political demands.

According to the high customs against Brazil announced by US President Donald Trump, both countries are heading for a trade conflict. Trump had announced a custom of 50 percent on the import of products from Brazil on Wednesday evening from August 1st and linked this with sharp criticism of Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula announced retaliation and emphasized that his country could not be patronized by anyone. Every one -sided increase in tariffs is answered in accordance with the Brazilian law on economic reciprocity.

Trump takes Bolsonaro protected: witch hunt has to end

Trump criticizes Brazil for dealing with the controversial former president Jair Bolsonaro. The right ex-president is on trial because after his election defeat in 2022 he is said to have planned a coup attempt against the government of his successor Lula. He rejects the allegations. Trump wrote in the customs letter that Bolsonaro was highly respected in his reign. The US President asked: “This is a witch hunt that should end immediately”.

Lula, on the other hand, kept on platform X: “Sovereignty, respect and the unshakable defense of the interests of the Brazilian people are the values that lead our relationship to the world.” At the same time, he emphasized that the judicial proceedings against those responsible for the planning of the state coup fell exclusively into the responsibility of the Brazilian judiciary and are therefore not the subject of interference or threats that could endanger the independence of the national institutions.

Brazil is the largest economy in South America. According to China, the United States is the second most important trading partner and a great investor in the country.
