Full beaches, protesting locals: tourism in Europe is reaching its limits. Statistics show in which regions the pressure of travelers is particularly large.
Tourists not only bring money, but also problems. This is indicated by the Federal Statistical Office when publishing the most popular travel destinations in Europe. After that, in 2023, 117 tourist overnight stays came to every inhabitant and every inhabitant on the Greek islands in the southern Aegean, Santorino, Mykonos and Rhodes. There was a similarly high tourism intensity with 98 nights in the Ionian Islands around Corfu.
Tourist masses also meet comparatively few inhabitants in South Tyrol (68 nights), on the Croatian Adriatic coast (67) and on the Balearic Islands (57). On their main island of Mallorca there had recently been massive protests by the residents against too high rents and living costs.
Almost no tourists, on the other hand, found in some regions of Poland and Romania. There was almost one night per inhabitant over the year.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with many overnight stays
In Germany, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with a good 18 nights per inhabitant is the area with the most intensive tourism. Compared to 237 EU regions, the ranking means 17th. Most visited German travel destination was Upper Bavaria with Munich and 41.6 million overnight stays.
In absolute numbers, the Canary Islands, which also belong to Spain, were the most popular holiday destination in Europe with 95.6 million overnight stays in 2023. With 43 overnight stays per capita, Tenerife and Co. were only 10th in the tourism intensity.
