A weak economy, high energy prices and trade conflicts put a strain on the chemical industry. This also leaves traces with the heavyweight.
The world’s largest chemical company BASF is prognosis due to persistent macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties. For 2025, BASF is now striving for 7.3 billion to 7.7 billion euros in the adjusted result before interest, taxes and depreciation (EBITDA), as the DAX company announced. BASF had previously targeted 8.0 to 8.4 billion euros – after almost 7.9 billion in the previous year.
In the second quarter, the operational result was 1.77 billion euros according to preliminary calculations and thus met the expectations of the analysts. In the previous year, BASF had shown 1.96 billion euros here. Sales decreased by 2.1 percent to 15.77 billion euros in the quarter due to lower prices. The bottom line was that a profit of 80 million euros occurred on the shareholders, after 430 million euros in the previous year. Analysts had expected a much higher surplus.
The chemical industry has been suffering from a weakness in demand and sunken prices for a long time. In addition, there are continuing uncertainties in connection with the customs policy of US President Donald Trump. Austerity programs run at the chemical giants – especially the headquarters in Ludwigshafen should become more competitive.
On July 30th, BASF plans to present its complete numbers and details for the second annual quarter.
