When the desk is in danger

When the desk is in danger

No commuting to the office, quiet when working: Many office workers want to work from home at least for a few days even after the end of the pandemic.

However, the organization of such hybrid working time models with constant switching between work and home will be a major challenge for companies, says Nils Backhaus, a specialist in work organization at the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Baua).

Very few employees would like to be able to work from home one hundred percent. Most of them want to come to the office on certain days of the week. But there is a pitfall: according to surveys, Mondays and Fridays are the most popular days for working from home. If the majority of the workforce wants to work in the company from Tuesday to Thursday, it could become too cramped in the smaller offices. There can also be dissatisfaction between those who are allowed to work from home and those who are indispensable in the company.

“Flexi offices” and communal desks are forms of work organization imported from the USA: If employees had to book their desks electronically, as is already the case in some companies, this could lead to frustration.

Too tightly calculated offices could lead to lower productivity and a worse working atmosphere, says Hannah Schade from the Leibnitz Institute for Labor Research. She recommends different types of rooms for different activities and enough space.
