Trump to tariff: We talk to EU and make progress

According to US President Donald Trump, there is progress in the customs conflict between the USA and the EU. He said to journalists when asked whether they are still negotiating with the EU: “We are talking to the EU and making progress.” The US President did not provide any details. At the same time, he added that there was already a “deal” – and made it clear that he referred to the tariffs he announced on Saturday in the amount of 30 percent to import EU products from August 1st. Trump pushed after: “But at the same time we talk to each other.”
According to the European Commission on Tuesday, a team of trade experts was sent to Washington for technical discussions. In addition, on the same day there should be a phone call between EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic and the US trade officer Jamieson Greer. According to a spokesman, Sefcovic had already spoken to US Minister of Trade Howard Lutnick on Monday. However, nothing became known about the course and the exact topics of the exchange. For tactical reasons, the EU does not comment on the state of negotiations.
What is the previous status?
Until Trump’s customs announcement, the EU had actually hoped that a fundamental agreement was within reach for the defusing of the customs dispute. In the event that the United States introduces the new customs rate, the EU wants to react with counter -tariffs, among other things. Trump also wrote in his letter to the EU: If the EU is ready to open its previously closed trading markets for the United States and to eliminate it, it may be considered to adapt to the letter. Depending on the development of relationships, the tariffs could be adapted up or down.
