The fuel cell was celebrated as an environmentally friendly drive. But in everyday life, dealing with hydrogen proves to be a delicate and expensive. This also has consequences for the Stellantis subsidiary Opel.
The Opel mother group Stellantis withdraws from the development and production of fuel cell cars. The second largest car company in Amsterdam announced that hydrogen -powered light commercial vehicles will establish themselves across the board before the end of the current decade.
As a result, the production of fuel cell vanes planned for the summer is stopped in Hordain, French and Gliwice in Poland. However, this would not affect the staff in the two locations. The development center of the German daughter Opel in Rüsselsheim also has to springs. Around 130 engineers are to be entrusted there with other projects.
Opel was a competence center
In 2017, Opel received the group-wide competence center for the hydrogen drive after taking over by the Peugeot mother PSA. In 2021, a first small series of the Opel Vivaro van started with a fuel cell on board. PSA is merged with Fiat Chrysler on Stellantis.
Stellantis wants to take up talks with the partners of the Symbio joint venture for the production of fuel cells. The suppliers Michelin and Forvia are involved.
