Heat, heavy rain and dryness add the fruit farmers. In many places, the harvests are bad. Consumers could soon feel this. Two varieties are particularly affected.
Customers in Germany have to prepare for rising prices and shelves for fruits, jams and jams. The reason for this is weather-related crop failures, the Federal Association of Fruit, Vegetable and Potato Processing Industry (Bogk) announced.
The raw material prices are as high as ever, the increases are enormous compared to the already short of the previous year, says managing director Christoph Freitag. He expects manufacturers to pass on the additional costs to enforce higher sales prices. Premium products could be more expensive.
High harvest losses in many countries
In 2025 and 2026, bottlenecks are expected, especially for products with cherries and black currants. According to the association, however, all industrially processed fruit varieties are scarce – including those in which the fresh market is well supplied. After several bad years, fruit stocks are exhausted. Even normal harvests in the coming years were not enough to turn the trend.
According to Friday, the main reason for the situation is climate change. The weather is “as changeable than ever”. Rainfall, hail and frost would have halved the plum harvest throughout the EU. The cherry harvest in Poland is heavily reduced, in Southeast Europe there are failures of 30 to 40 percent. The yields in Turkey and Serbia are up to 80 percent worse.
According to the information, the consequences are also drastic in Greece. According to this, 40 to 80 percent of the apricot harvest is no longer necessary due to drought and heat, and half of the peaches. Bio-cultivation is particularly affected. According to the industry association, it has not been possible across Europe to contain plant diseases because there is a lack of approved pesticides. The harvest is therefore extremely low, even with vegetables. The conventional vegetable harvest has just started in most varieties.
Fruit cannons already 46 percent more expensive than 2020
According to Bogk managing director, the fruit growing in Germany is not badly affected by crop failures, there is sufficient local fruit on the fresh market. “But the German manufacturers of jams and fruits are mostly dependent on the orchards in the European partner countries mentioned,” he says.
Consumer prices for the products have recently increased significantly. According to the Federal Statistical Office, consumers paid an average of 46 percent more than in 2020. Jam, jam or jelly cost average 32 percent more in June.
