Metal and electrical industry continues to lose jobs

The situation in the industry remains tense. Tens of thousands of jobs have been mined since the beginning of the year. From the association’s point of view, an alarm signal for politics.

The number of employees in the metal and electrical industry continues to decrease significantly. Since the beginning of the year alone, around 60,000 jobs have been lost in the sector, the total metal employers’ association said on the basis of a corporate survey. In May, the number of employees was 2.5 percent lower than at the same time of the previous year – despite a somewhat relaxing order situation.

At the end of 2024, 3.9 million people were still working in the industry. The new federal government has already taken some measures to ensure relief and better competitive conditions in Germany. Total metal managing director Oliver Zander, for example, called the reduction in electricity tax and the investment. “However, the speed at which the decline in employment in the metal and electrical industry continues shows that the federal government has no time for breaks,” he said. Bureaucracy must be reduced.

Meanwhile there was some relaxation in the number of new orders. Their value increased by four percent in comparison with the same period last year in comparison to the same period. However, the association has recently worsened again, the association said.
