Pilots: Leipzig is the safest German airport

The German airports could become even safer if the runways were better secured. The Cockpit Association found exemplary in Leipzig.

According to the Pilot Union Association Cockpit (VC), Leipzig-Halle is the safest airport in Germany. During their annual airport check, the pilots praised the exemplary light systems of the runways. All-day-lit stop strips are also contained here on the access roads, which are intended to prevent clashes on the slopes.

A warning example of such accidents is the catastrophic collision of two aircraft at the beginning of 2024 in Tokyo-Haneda. Stop strips were present there, but defective at the time of the accident. Five people died on board a machine of the coast guard, while the crew and passengers of an Airbus of the Japan Airlines were able to escape the flame inferno.

The previous leader Munich slipped to second place in the current evaluation because the stop strips are not operated all day. It is a common problem at the German airports that the existing strips are usually only switched on by the air traffic control in poor visual conditions, says a spokesman for VC.

All airports safely enough

Basically, according to VC, all German airports are safe enough for passenger flight operations. Compliance and control of the international regulations is the responsibility of the supervisory authorities. When striving for the greatest possible certainty, there is almost always need for improvement. Among other things, the pilots warn that relapse systems for the US system are installed, which is subsequently disturbed by geopolitical tensions such as the Ukraine War.

New bottom light Lübeck

At the end of the security table, Lübeck replaced Mannheim Airport. In the north, the pilots disregarded that they are not invited to security meetings. There are also no sufficiently attached open spaces at the ends of the railways with a length of 300 meters.

The Working Group of the Cockpit Association has undergone German commercial airports an annual security check since 1978. Regional airports were also recorded later. For the second time, colleagues from Switzerland were also involved. A catalog of criteria serves as the basis for the investigation, which includes both international regulations and from a pilot perspective of meaningful additional equipment. The methodology was slightly changed compared to the previous year because particularly effective safety precautions are weighted more.
