Oil find in Polish Baltic Sea – BUND refers to climate goals

An oil find off the Polish coast near the German border causes a stir: The Federal Environment Ministry expects Germany to participate in environmental exams and reminds of the climate.

With a view to a possible new oil and natural gas promotion in front of the Polish Baltic Sea coast, the Federal Environment Ministry is reminiscent of the European Union’s climate goals. The EU wants to become climate -neutral by 2050, so I don’t want to be able to emit more greenhouse gases and be bound again, said a ministry spokesman in Berlin. Investors should know: “The promotion of oil and gas is a business with a clear end.”

The information on the oil and natural gas deposits is now at the Polish Ministry of Environment and Climate and would be evaluated there. It is assumed that an environmental impact assessment will occur in the further procedure that will probably be cross -border. One is in contact with the Polish authorities, but funding in coastal waters would be the responsibility of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The Canadian company Central European Petroleum (CEP) had carried out trial bores. According to the result, the eligible occurrence of oil and natural gas is estimated at 200 million barrels oil equivalent (159 liters each), CEP recently said in Warsaw. The Wolin East oil field is about six kilometers from Swinemünde (Swinoujscie). During the exploration, the drilling platform was also visible by the German part of the island of Usedom.

State Ministry: Cross -border examination promised

According to the Schwerin Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Environmental Authority in Stettin (SZCZECIN) has promised that after the application, Germany is involved in exploration or extraction as part of a cross -border environmental impact assessment.

The Ministry had also told the “Welt” newspaper that the oil find was partly in German territory. It can be assumed that it was the “Heringsdorf” deposit, which was drilled at the time of the GDR. The owner of the rod rights for the deposit on the German side is Neptune Energy Deutschland GmbH.

The notification of CEP on the extent of the deposit causes concern in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There are concerns about possible environmental damage or tourism that is important in the region.
