Everyone is talking about Trigema – but what does the name actually mean?

Fashion “Made in Germany” has written the Trigema W. Grupp KG on its flags. For more than 100 years, the company in Burladingen (Baden-Württemberg) has been producing mass-friendly everyday and leisure clothing- until today. Trigema employs around 1200 people. From 1969 to 2023, Wolfgang Grupp was at the head of the company before handing over the business to his children Bonita and Wolfgang Junior. Trigema is still a family business.
Trigema – meaning of the name explained
The company achieved great popularity through its television commercials, which have often been running shortly before the ARD “Tagesschau” since 1992, and for years a synchronized chimpanzees, part in interaction with Wolfgang Grupp. The animal is now computer animated. “We would also like to set an example for animal welfare and accommodate all those who work for the protection of the free -living chimpanzees,” Trigema writes.

The suit is Wolfgang Grupps trademark. “Old School” might be said at a time when even CEOs of billion dollars in jeans and sneakers stand in front of their employees. But not group fashion taste made him again and again into the headlines. With provocative statements he regularly shaking the head. For example, he said about employees in the home office: “There are no home office for me. If someone can work at home, he is unimportant.”

And yet: The chimpanzee and Patriarch Grupp have made the company one of the most famous fashion brands in the country in the past decades – and yet very few people know the importance of the trigema company name.
When it was founded in 1919 by Josef and Eugen Mayer, ancestors of the group, the company was registered under the name “Mechanical jersey factory Gebr. Mayer KG”. Later the renamed to jersey factory Gebr. Mayer KG, which explains today’s name. This first businessman and Federal Cross of Merit Wolfgang Grupp 1969: From the TriCotwar factory Gebr. MAYer KG became trigema. The name of the label has therefore emerged as a suitcase word from the original name, similar to Haribo for HaNS RiEgel, Bonn or Hanuta for HaselnuSSTafel stands.
